A giant warehouse full of computers for storing data
is Hobo style explanation Simple, everybody gets it.
Hobo style, Kiss keep it simple and standby. Now some facts
U.S. has about 4,700+ data-center facilities are currently listed in one industry database.
And thousands more are being expanded or built.
Their basic job: store and process enormous amounts of computer data and make it available when you use the internet.
They run things like Google searches, websites, cloud storage, streaming, banking, AI, apps, business systems and backups.
Think of a data center as a giant warehouse full of computers and storage, connected to the internet 24/7.
And AI is now driving a huge new wave of data-center construction. JLL says 66 GW of capacity is currently under construction across North America.
2 good Hobo-style facts:
Water: Some data centers use reclaimed/gray water—treated wastewater that isn’t drinking water—to cool the computers. EPA specifically lists treated municipal wastewater as a source for data-center cooling.
Electricity: Because new AI data centers need enormous amounts of power and the public grid can take years to connect, some are building their own power plants right next door—often using natural-gas generators, fuel cells, solar, or other systems.
Hobo translation:
“It’s a warehouse full of computers that needs so much electricity and cooling that some of them are basically building their own power plant and using recycled water to keep the computers cool.”
